Pickens County deputies say they were monitoring traffic near a gathering in Talking Rock during the early morning hours of Aug. 15 when they heard multiple gunshots.

Moments later, deputies spotted a Ford F-150 leaving the area and tried to pull it over. Investigators said the driver, identified as 17-year-old Miguel Rivera-Penaloza, took off instead.

Authorities said the truck reached speeds exceeding 100 mph before deputies called off the chase because of safety concerns.
