GREENE COUNTY, Ga. — A former Georgia administrator and her husband are facing charges after investigators say they were involved in the theft of school grant funds.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Friday that Kimberley Kerchelle Simmons, 52, of Milledgeville, has been charged with theft by taking and false statements. Her husband, Eric Geroy Simmons, 58, also of Milledgeville, has been charged with theft by taking.
According to the GBI, Kimberley Simmons previously served as the Greene County Board of Education’s Director of Special Education.
The investigation began on July 24 when the Greene County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI investigate allegations that Simmons had stolen funds from the school system. Authorities said both Kimberley and Eric Simmons were involved in the theft of about $50,000 in grant funding.

The GBI said Kimberley Simmons resigned from her position with the Greene County Board of Education on Sept. 2.
The Greene County School System released the following statement:
The Greene County School System has been working in cooperation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and is aware of today’s announcement regarding the arrest of Dr. Kimberley Simmons, the former Director of Exceptional Student Education at Greene County Schools. Prior to her resignation last week, Dr. Simmons had been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the district’s internal review and investigation.
Dr. Aaryn Schmuhl, Superintendent, stated: “The district takes its responsibility to safeguard public funds and maintain the trust of our students, families, employees, and community extremely seriously. An internal audit revealed evidence of misuse of funds, and district leadership took immediate action to investigate and address the concerns with law enforcement. We will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement and appreciate their swift response and thorough work on this matter. As this remains an active investigation, the Greene County School System will not be providing further comment at this time.”

Both suspects were booked into the Greene County Jail.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Once completed, the case file will be turned over to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
