City extends enforcement action for short-term rental operators

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Department of City Planning is extending enforcement action for short-term rental operators.

The extension is from June 1, 2022, to Sept. 6, 2022.

The extension allows current short-term rental operators additional time to apply for the license before code enforcement begins.

This decision came as the city determined that the implementation of Ordinance 22-0-1241 may need further consideration.

The Short-term Rental Ordinance (20-0-1656) went into effect on March 1, 2022.

Interim City Planning Commissioner Janide Sidifall said the authorities want to be responsive to communities and Atlanta residents.

“We heard our residents asking to extend the enforcement deadline, and we listened. That is always the goal of the City: to make sure that voices are heard and acknowledged,” said Sidifall.

All property owners who use their homes for short-term rentals are required to apply for a license through the Department of City Planning’s Office of Buildings.

With Atlanta hosting different conferences, conventions, and sporting events, the need for the ordinance grew to provide residents a way to use their homes for increased revenue as temporary housing solutions for visitors coming into the city.

The Short-term Rental Ordinance allowed the City of Atlanta to establish a framework of regulations that set expectations for short-term rental operators.

Office of Buildings’ Director Gregory Pace said the ordinance and regulations are necessary for quality control in the short-term rental industry.

“It is a way to ensure homeowners or long-term tenants a way to legally operate a short-term rental unit and earn additional income, while providing additional ways for people to visit our city,” said Pace.
