ATLANTA — Atlanta police say a man accused of stealing landscaping equipment from a work truck tried to evade arrest, but not before running across a busy Atlanta interstate.

According to police, officers responded just after 6 p.m. on Aug. 11 to a reported theft from a car along Oakcrest Drive SW.
The victim told officers an unknown man approached him and threatened to steal his equipment before climbing into the back of his work truck and taking landscaping tools.
Police said the victim provided video footage showing the suspect actively stealing the equipment. Investigators reviewed the footage and were able to obtain the suspect vehicle’s license plate number.

Using license plate reader technology, officers tracked the vehicle to the area of Metropolitan Parkway SW and Connell Avenue SW. When officers found the vehicle, police said the suspect ran away on foot, running across multiple lanes of traffic on Interstate 75.
Officers established a perimeter and searched the area before locating and arresting the suspect, identified as Edward McPherson.
According to police, McPherson was charged with obstruction, reckless driving, pedestrian in roadway, entering an automobile and theft by taking. He was transported to the Fulton County Jail.
Police said neither McPherson nor any officers were injured during the apprehension.
In body camera footage released by police, the suspect can be heard telling officers, “Y’all got me, sir,” after he was taken into custody.
