Baggage handler at New Orleans airport killed after hair got stuck in belt loader

NEW ORLEANS — A baggage handler at Louis Armstrong New Orleans died Tuesday evening after her hair got stuck in a belt loader.

Nola.com said that Jermani Thompson, 26, was unloading baggage from a Frontier Airlines flight when the incident happened around 10:20 p.m.

The Director of Communications for Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport told WVUE that the accident happened on the apron, which is where the aircraft is parked and maintained.

Thompson was taken to the hospital where she later died, according to WWL-TV.

Thompson was an employee of GAT Airline Ground Support, according to WDSU.

GAT’s chief executive officer, Mike Hough, told Nola.com that Thompson’s hair got stuck in a loading belt.

A spokesperson from Frontier Airlines told Nola.com that one flight was canceled Wednesday morning and other flights were operating on schedule.

Nola.com said that an autopsy has not yet been scheduled.

No further information has been released.
