Teenage girl dead, 3 others hospitalized after rescue at Georgia park

BIBB COUNTY, Ga. — Three family members stepped into a river at a Georgia park to enjoy the water, now a 17-year-old is dead, two other family members are in the hospital, and a rescuer is recovering.

Alex Mendoza, 28, Laura Yesseria, 23, and Betty Gisselle Rivera, 17, were in the Ocmulgee River in Frank Amerson Park when they went under the water, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

People visiting the park heard calls for help and jumped in the water.

Citizens pulled Mendoza and Yesseria from the water, according to investigators.

Rivera was found further down the river. Macon-Bibb County firefighters helped one of the rescuers pull Rivera from the river. Emergency workers performed CPR but she did not survive.

Mendoza and Yesseria were taken to the hospital where they were stable.

One of the men who jumped in the water to help was also hospitalized and stable.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says the incident is under investigation and is reminding everyone to wear life jackets while on the river.
