Teen killed in accidental shooting, police say

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A teenager was killed during an apparent accidental shooting early Saturday morning.

Neighbors tell Channel 2's Matt Johnson they're still shaken up by the sounds of screaming and the thought of a teenager dying at their apartment complex.

Sharon Clarke tells Johnson she woke up to the sounds of teenagers screaming.

"The guys said 'Oh my God, oh my God,'" Clarke said.

Neighbors say they heard a gunshot just after midnight and then came the chaos.

"I saw a young man come out crying and screaming saying oh he got shot, he got shot," neighbor Tim Clark said.

Clarke says she rushed upstairs to find 17-year-old Rodderick Holder shot in the left eye.

"I was just comforting him and just letting him know that it's okay and just to hang in there," Clarke said.

She tells Johnson she started performing CPR on Holder while his teenage relatives were in the apartment where police say he was shot accidentally.

Police say teens, as young as 13 and as old as 17, were handling a gun when somehow it went off at the apartments on Meadow Glenn Village Lane.

That's when Clarke's training as a nurse kicked in.

"I just think about his mom and how important it is to try and help him just for his mom's sake because I'm a mother as well," Clarke said.

Holder later died at Grady Memorial Hospital.

DeKalb police arrested a 16-year-old and charged him with involuntary manslaughter.

One teen's mother told Johnson Saturday morning she's not sure where they got the gun.

Johnson was there Saturday afternoon when a K9 searched for the gun behind the apartment.

Clarke says she had trouble sleeping and now she offers her condolences to the boy's mother.

"I can't even imagine losing a 17-year-old," Clarke said.
