Surf instructor bitten by shark at Tybee Island

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — A man is recovering after he was bitten by a shark at Tybee Island on Tuesday.

The man, named Hot Sushi, is the surf instructor at Hot Sushi’s Happy Surf Camp Aloha on the island. He was bitten near 18th Street around noon.

WJCL-TV said the emergency officials cleared the water for an “hour or two” after the shark bite.

Hot Sushi wrote on public Facebook that he feels lucky after he was bitten by the shark on his leg. He said he went to the ER after the “intense painful deep cleaning with plenty of stitches.”

But Hot Sushi maintains that he is extremely lucky.

“I have seen the worst during as my waterman career and as a big mountain snow skier career that lost many dear friends as well as people who were close by us so I’m more than lucky,” Hot Sushi said.

Hot Sushi posted pictures of the incident on his Facebook page. In the pictures, it shows lifeguards and emergency crews taping up his lower leg and a photo of him leaving the hospital showing the shaka hand gesture.

Hot Sushi wrote that his surf camp is closed Wednesday so that he could meet with doctors.
