UPDATE: Officer shot in the neck after chasing murder suspect, police say

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it has been called by College Park police to investigate a shooting and chase involving an officer.

City officials told Channel 2 Action News a College Park officer was shot in the neck after chasing a murder suspect Saturday.

The chase started when a license plate reader spotted a vehicle connected to the suspect and alerted police.

The chase started in College Park and ended near the intersection of North Outer Loop Road and Toffie Terrace, which is near the Atlanta airport.

College Park Sgt. Charles Landrum suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. Police said the injury is not serious and he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where the bullet was removed. He will be in the hospital overnight for observation.

The suspect, identified as Edward Lee Cherry, was also shot and is also recovering at the hospital. It’s unclear if the suspect or someone else shot Landrum.

Investigators told Channel 2 there is a second location involved off South Martin Street in East Point.

The GBI, College Park and East Point police are investigating both scenes together.

This is the 28th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2020.
