Metro Atlanta police break window of burning home to rescue elderly woman

CONYERS, Ga. — Several police officers in Conyers are being recognized for their bravery after breaking into a burning home to rescue an elderly woman who was trapped inside.

On Sunday morning, officers responded to a house fire on Willow Creek Court. They arrived before firefighters and found heavy smoke coming out of the house.

While they were at the home, the realized an elderly woman was stuck inside the burning home.

In body camera footage released to Channel 2 Action News on Wednesday, the officers can be seen responding to what sounds like the woman banging on the window.

The officers then tell the woman to back away from the window and one of them smashes it with his baton while another tries kicking down the door.

Eventually, the officer was able to get into the burning home through the window and help get the woman out through the window and into the arms of the other officers outside.

Police confirmed that the woman was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, but has since been released. None of the officers were injured.
