Man accused of shooting officer, escaping to Georgia killed in shootout with police

WALKER COUNTY, Ga. — UPDATE: The search for a man accused of shooting a Tennessee officer and escaping into Georgia is over.

East Ridge Police Department said Christopher J. Kitts was shot and killed during a shootout with officers Monday morning.

“The East Ridge Police Department is thankful for the assistance of the local, state, and federal officers as well as the outpouring of support from the community. Please keep Corporal Prescott and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they recover from this incident,” the department said.

Police are searching for a man accused of shooting a Tennessee police officer and is now on the run in Georgia.

East Ridge police said an officer made a traffic stop on a red Dodge Challenger around 1:50 p.m. Sunday.

Before the officer, Cpl. Terry Prescott, could get out of his patrol car, the driver got out of the car and fired several shots at him. The man then jumped back in his car and took off.

Prescott was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. The challenger was found by Georgia State Patrol in Rossville, Ga. in Walker County.

The suspect has been identified as Christopher J. Kitts. Police said he is armed and dangerous and anyone who sees him should not approach him.
