AUSTELL, Ga. — Two Austell police officers came under gunfire during a traffic stop earlier this month, investigators said.

Austell police said an officer noticed a tag violation on a white truck traveling on Austell Powder Springs Road and attempted to stop the vehicle. Instead, the truck sped up.
Police said four shots were fired at the first officer, who then pulled out of the pursuit. A second officer took the lead and was fired at three times.
Dash camera video captured officers calling out, “Shots fired,” as the pursuit continued.

One officer’s camera captured a description of the suspected shooter as a white man with tattoos covering his face.
Investigators identified the suspect as Adam Hawkins, a convicted felon. Police said Hawkins fired the shots from the passenger seat of the truck.
Neither officer was injured.
Cobb County police and Powder Springs police responded and helped establish a perimeter. Police said everyone inside the truck was ultimately taken into custody.
