Police identify gunman who was killed after shooting Cobb County officer

After an hours-long search following the shooting of a Cobb County police officer in Acworth on Sunday afternoon, police confirm they have fatally shot the suspect.

The suspect has been identified as Luis Rey Ruiz, 20.

Police said the officer was responding to reports of a domestic dispute at a home on North Shores Road around 3:30 p.m. when Ruiz pulled out a gun and started shooting.

“The man drew a weapon and point blank shot the officer in the chest,” Sgt. Wayne Delk with the Cobb County police said. “The officer was wearing a vest.”

Police said the officer, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Channel 2′s Michael Seiden was at the scene Sunday, where dozens of officers from the Acworth, Cobb County, Paulding County, Marietta, Kennesaw and the Georgia State Patrol assisted in the search for the gunman. State Route 92 was shut down in both directions as officers fanned the area.
