Remains found believed to be missing Georgia toddler; mother charged with murder

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — The Chatham County Police Department has arrested the mother of a missing Georgia toddler, Quinton Simon.

On Monday, police announced that they arrested Leilani Simon, 22, and charged her with murder in connection to her son’s disappearance and death.

Simon reported that her son was missing from their home on Oct. 5. On Oct. 12, the Chatham County Police Department announced that Quinton was believed to be dead and his mother was the prime suspect.

On Friday, Oct. 18, the Chatham County Police Department and FBI announced that evidence led them to believe that Quinton’s remains were at the Waste Management Landfill in Chatham County, and a massive search began to try to locate them.

After coming through 1.2 million pounds of trash over a 30-day period, investigators said on Friday, Nov. 18, they uncovered what they believed were the toddler’s remains in a landfill.

Police have sent the remains to the FBI to confirm they are human and belong to Quinton.

“Every member of the Chatham County Police Department has been impacted by Quinton’s case,” said Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley.

Police said they don’t anticipate any other arrests in the case.

“We are deeply saddened by this case, but we are thankful that we are one step closer to justice for little Quinton,” police wrote on Twitter.

Simon was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center where she will be held until a bond hearing.
