Parents say school bus driver consistently late picking up kids

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County school district is investigating a bus driver who parents say is late picking children up at the bus stop.

Several parents told Channel 2 Action News the bus driver, who is scheduled to pick up at West Austin Road and Liberty Valley at 6:52 a.m., is often late.

Parents say they have to scramble for a way to get their children to Snapfinger Elementary, which is two miles away.

“I asked the parents that were waiting if they needed help with their kids to school and I just took them all to school myself,” said parent Daneedra Ponder.

One student said when the bus is late, she misses out.

"We don't eat breakfast and we just have to go to class hungry," said student Dayauna Ponder.

DeKalb Schools Communications Director Quinn Hudson said there is not a bus driver shortage.

The district operates 850 buses daily to get two thirds of the student body to school by bus and they are investigating the allegations of a driver with a chronic problem of showing up late to work.

“We’re on time, the bus should be on time,” said grandmother Carolyn Lucas.
