EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A large tech company with plans to put down deep roots in south Georgia started one of its first efforts to help residents living in the area where it is setting up operations.
OpenAI committed $4.8 million to cover all student breakfast and lunch costs across the Effingham County School District for the 2026-27 school year. The districtwide meal program started Sept. 8.
The grant is part of an $80 million community commitment established by OpenAI under its Project Camellia initiative.
County and school leaders identified student meal costs as a direct way to support local families, prompting OpenAI to provide one year of funding.
OpenAI has been gathering feedback from residents and local organizations to determine how to allocate its community commitment.

Hank Evans leads community engagement for OpenAI. He explained how the company had focused its assistance efforts in the Effingham County region.
“From the beginning, we have said our $80 million community commitment should reflect the priorities of Effingham County residents,” Evans said. “We have been meeting with residents and local organizations and asking the community to weigh in on future investments. School meals emerged as one immediate way we can help families now and this $4.8 million commitment will cover student breakfast and lunches this school year while broader community input continues to shape how we direct future funding.”

School district leadership cited the financial flexibility the grant provides for local households.
Dr. Yancy J. Ford, superintendent of the Effingham County School District, praised how the funds would help students in the district.
“This generous commitment from OpenAI provides immediate, practical relief for our community,” Ford said. “Providing meals for our students allows our families extra financial flexibility while ensuring our students are nourished and ready to learn every day.”
Vickie Decker, chair of the Effingham County School District Board of Education, praised the broad community impact of the program.
“This is a wonderful gift for our entire community,” Decker said. “OpenAI’s incredible generosity brings meaningful support straight to our local families while making sure every student is cared for and ready to learn.”
District meal administrators noted the connection between nutrition and classroom focus. Jessica O’Leary, nutritional services coordinator for the school district, addressed the relief the grant offers to parents facing higher costs of living.“Hungry students can’t learn,” O’Leary said. “With daily expenses rising for so many families, knowing that their child will receive a healthy lunch gives our parents one less thing to worry about.”
In addition to funding school meals, OpenAI opened grant applications for local organizations seeking assistance and launched a public survey asking residents to rank local parks and recreation for potential investments.
OpenAI said the public survey responses and grant applications from local organizations will be used to direct future distributions from the remaining community fund.
