SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Exit 5 on southbound Georgia 400 in Sandy Springs will close, and two temporary exits will open in its place.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will shut down the existing Exit 5 and open one temporary ramp to the North Springs MARTA station and another to Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive.

The two temporary exits will be labeled Exit 5-B and 5-A.
Exit 5-B will go to the MARTA station. Exit 5-A will go to Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive.

“When we do this, the crews with the equipment need more space. And so by closing that area, it gives them more space to bring in their equipment, and it also helps keep everybody safe as well,” Joe Schulman, Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson, said.
Schulman said the temporary exits could be in place for up to 2 years.
The project will add two express lanes in each direction from the North Springs MARTA station north into Forsyth County.
The project is a public-private partnership valued at $11 billion. It is projected to be completed in 2031.

“So over the next five years, there’s going to be more traffic shifts. As with this one, we plan to make sure the public knows well ahead of time,” Schulman said.
Drivers are advised to follow the signs and know their navigation apps might not update for the changes.
“That’s definitely the downside of it. So there’s gonna be pros, there’s gonna be cons of it. The end result, hopefully, in five years is that it will speed up traffic and cause everything to move a lot smoother,” said Mario Swinney, who uses Georgia 400 regularly.
More traffic shifts are expected over the next 5 years as the project moves forward.
