MILTON, Ga. — Milton High School is remembering 9/11 with their annual “Field of Flags.”
Every year on the school’s front lawn, a group of students and city firefighters plant 2,977 American flags, one for every innocent life lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Each flag carries a tag with the name of one of the victims.
During a Labor Day stroll, Steve and Kristi Gillam made it a point to take their walk past Milton High School. They say it’s a sight that brings it home.

“The events that took place were far from Milton and the Atlanta area, but yet I think it’s great that the school has rallied around this event,” Steve Gillam told Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen.
This campus opened in 2005. The first students who took part in this tradition lived through 9/11. This year, an incoming freshman was born 11 years after it happened.
The Gillams’ sons went to school here, and they’re grateful for that.

“It should never be forgotten, and I respect the families and Milton High School for putting this on every year. When Friday comes, it’s a very big event here,” Kristi Gillam said.
Milton High School’s annual 9/11 ceremony begins at 10 a.m. All are welcome.
