Grandmother facing charges after toddler's meth overdose death

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Police have a murder warrant out for the grandmother of a baby who died from a meth overdose.

Investigators say they were called to Sandy Springs apartment complex where officers responded to a report of an unresponsive infant on March 11.%

When police arrived they said they found a 9-month-old with no signs of life. An investigation surrounding the death of the infant was launched.
 
The investigation showed that the infant died as a result of a methamphetamine overdose and a murder investigation was initiated.
 
Sandy Springs detectives identified the grandmother of the infant victim, 45-year-old Tonya Danyial Monroe as the suspect in the homicide.

Arrest warrants for Monroe were signed on June 14, 2016 for the crimes associated with this case.

“The baby did have some medical conditions so it was originally believed that it was a natural death but after further investigation by the medical examiner’s office it was determined the baby had narcotics,” said Sgt. Forrest Bohannon with the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Monroe is currently facing charges of felony murder, possession of methamphetamine and cruelty to children.

She was last known to be driving a silver 2004 Toyota 4-Runner with Georgia tag: RAL9819. Her whereabouts are unknown at this time.
