ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta school districts have reported 44,737 cases of COVID-19 among students and staff since the start of the school year, but new cases in metro Atlanta schools have drastically declined since mid-September.
Gwinnett County, Georgia’s largest school district, reported just 220 new cases of COVID-19 this week, down from 1,186 the week of Aug. 30.
Cobb County reported just 133 new cases of COVID-19 the week of Oct. 10, down from more than 1,700 cases the last week of August.
DeKalb County reported just 76 new cases this week.
The 7-day average for new COVID-19 cases reported in children ages 0 to 17 was 307 on Oct. 15, down from a daily average of 2,208 on August 28, an 86% decrease.
The drop in cases led two metro Atlanta school districts, Marietta City Schools and Henry County Schools, to drop their mandatory mask policy last week.
