The girl’s family reported she had missed her bus and was walking to school, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said.
She said a man driving a large truck along Hickory Road stopped and asked if she needed a ride, coaxing her into getting in the vehicle.
The driver took the girl to a location in Canton and sexually assaulted her, she said. He then dropped her off near her school.
Detectives used automated license plate reader technology to identify a vehicle matching the description provided by the victim, helping them corroborate details from the victim and develop a suspect.
They executed a search warrant at the home of Raymond Sookram, 42, on Thursday morning.
He was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Molestation, Trafficking a Person for Sexual Servitude, and Interference with Custody.
“Sookram remains in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center without bond,” Captain Jay Baker said.
