They’re trying to get the word out and answer any questions from residents and business owners as both north and southbound lanes here will close for the next six months.

Construction signs warn drivers Fairburn Road in South Fulton shuts down next week, just north of Cascade.

The full closure is needed to rebuild two old bridges and keep a 30-inch water main connected.

“It’s going to be messed up for months and months,” said driver Victor Johnson.

Crews will have Fairburn closed to all but local traffic from Benjamin E. Mayes Drive to Cascade Road, with the posted detour taking traffic all the way inside the Perimeter, over Interstate 285, to Lindhurst Drive to get north and south.

“That can’t be happening. That’s just totally impossible. I travel this road all the time. 285 is already messed up and this is the alternative to 285. Why?” said driver Marion Gilbert.

South Fulton Mayor Carmalita Gumbs met with neighbors and businesses Friday to hear their concerns, one being cars using the back entrance to Walmart, taking the store parking lot as a cut-through.

“I do know with this particular corridor and construction on 285, it will challenge your patience. I was sitting in the traffic just last weekend, so I understand. But ask that you be patient with us.” Gumbs said.

The Fairburn Road closure was set, and the signs all say Monday morning the 5th.

But Gehlbach spoke with the city’s public works director who said they need a couple days more of prep work, so it’s likely pushed back to possibly middle of next week.

Then the road won’t reopen till next spring, by end of March 2027.
