Knife-wielding man dies after DeKalb officer shooting, authorities say

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A man is dead after police say he lunged at DeKalb County officers with a knife on Monday evening.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate after officers opened fire on the man.

Police said officers were called to the 2500 block of Terrace Trail around 6 p.m. to a call of a man “wielding a knife.” When officers arrived, they said they tried to make contact with the man, but he lunged at officers with the knife causing one of them to open fire on him. It’s unknown if he was hit, but officers said he ran into a home.

After working to make contact with the man, he again lunged at officers with the knife, causing them to shoot at him, authorities said. The man then went back into the home where he was later found dead.

No officers were injured in the incident.

A neighbor gave Channel 2 Action News cell phone video moments after the shooting, but he told us he watched the suspect run and jump into a window at the Terrace Trails condos and that’s when he heard several gunshots.

“I seen a young man running from the police, he jumped on the rooftop, kicked in the window and kicked the window a couple of times and he jumped through the window,” said neighbor Jason Neil.

NewsChopper 2 was over the scene after the incident and there were several police cars and an ambulance.
