Homeowner shoots, kills intruder who climbed through window of Atlanta home

ATLANTA — A shooting that left a man dead and another injured was determined to be an act of self defense.

Atlanta police said officers were called to the home on 134 Howell Street Monday afternoon in reference to a person shot. Two men were found on the scene with gunshot wounds.

One of the men died at the scene and the other, the homeowner, was taken to the hospital and listed as stable.

Police determined that the man who died climbed into the window of the home and attacked the homeowner. The homeowner then shot the man, killing him. The homeowner remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation.

Authorities said they are not anticipating charges in this case.

The shooting forced a nearby school, Howard Middle School, to alter its release plan. Bus pick-up was moved to the Randolph Street NE side of the school and parents picked up their kids on the John Wesley Dobbs Ave. NE side.

According to APS, the exterior doors to the school were locked and no students or staff were allowed outside while Atlanta Police conducted their investigation.
