ATLANTA — The Home Depot is being recognized for its role in Georgia business history with a new historical marker in Atlanta.

The Georgia Historical Society dedicated the marker Wednesday at The Home Depot Store Support Center, recognizing the company’s growth and its role in transforming the home improvement industry.
The marker is part of the Georgia Historical Society’s Georgia Business History Initiative, which recognizes companies that have contributed to Georgia’s economic, cultural and social development.
The Home Depot was founded by Bernie Marcus and Arthur M. Blank in 1978. The company opened its first two stores in Atlanta on June 22, 1979.

The company went public in 1981 and opened its 100th store in 1989. It expanded internationally with its first store in Canada in 1994 and later entered Mexico in 2001.
The Georgia Historical Society said The Home Depot helped change the home improvement industry by offering a wide selection of merchandise for both do-it-yourself customers and professional contractors, along with low prices and customer service.
The dedication ceremony included representatives from the Georgia Historical Society and The Home Depot, including co-founder Arthur M. Blank.
The Home Depot is the 29th company recognized through the Georgia Historical Society’s Georgia Business History Initiative.
