FAYETTE COUNTY — Police are thanking a brave shopper who helped officers take down a shoplifting suspect in Peachtree City.

According to police, two people attempted to shoplift at the Home Depot on Highway 54 on Jan. 18.

As officers were chasing one of the suspects, a very astute shopper spotted the chase as it headed toward him in the nearby Walmart parking lot.

In surveillance video posted on the police department’s Facebook page, you can see the shopper watching and waiting for the right moment for him to strike. And strike he did.

The shopper pushed his buggy right into the path of the running suspect, causing him to trip and fall onto the ground. That was just enough time for the officer to catch up with suspect and take him into custody.

The suspect was checked by paramedics at the scene but he was not injured.

Police thanked the hero shopper for helping officers but reminded the public to “consider the safety of yourself and all those around you as a priority.”

A police spokesperson told Channel 2 Action News that it was the first time in his 13 years of police work that he’s seen something like this happen before.
