Students protest after viral video shows teen slap girl who called him a racial slur

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — Students in Henry County staged a walkout after they say a Black student was suspended for slapping a white student who called him a racial slur.

The incident at Locust Grove High School was all caught on camera.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington was at the school, where some students said both students were wrong, but they should have gotten the same punishment.

Students told Washington that the female student was allowed to continue to go to class while the male student who slapped her was sent home.

On Thursday afternoon, a large group walked out of class and protested. They chanted ‘Black Lives Matter’ outside.

Senior Layla Moreau helped organize the protest, which she said was in response to not just what happened in the video but what happened afterwards.

In the video, a White female student calls a Black male student the “N” word. Next, you see the boy walk up to the girl and slap her.

It’s unclear what led up to the confrontation, but now, both students are facing consequences. Moreau said the students were treated very differently.

“She got to go to class and have her education, while he had to leave,” Moreau said. “He was only defending himself.”

Washington reached out to Henry County Schools about the disciplinary allegations.

A school district representative said, in part,

“We can’t share disciplinary action for students due to student privacy,” officials said. “Both students were disciplined based on their code of conduct infractions. School leaders have been working with and listing to any students who needed to express their feelings or concerns on the matter.”

Moreau said she’s been called a racial slur at the school before and wants the school district to do more.

“I just want some change,” Moreau said. “I’m just tired of the inequality in the school.”
