Wholesale store could be coming to Gwinnett Co. land last used for 1996 Atlanta Olympics

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County could move to bring a Costo-like wholesaler to the land last used for tennis matches in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The area on Bermuda Road near Highway 78 in Stone Mountain is a fenced-in vacant property.

A large tennis facility was demolished there in 2017.

A proposal is being considered by county commissioners that would bring a large wholesale store along, with three restaurants and hundreds of apartments, to the site.

Renderings for the proposal include images of a store that resembles Costco and a restaurant that resembles Whataburger.

Thursday night county leaders are hosting a public input session to get feedback on what should go there.

“For Costco, the closest one is really far,” nearby resident Anna Elmahdi told Channel 2′s Matt Johnson. “For people with bigger families, I think it’s great to go to a wholesale spot and be able to pick up your supplies in bulk.”

Local business owner and resident Vipul Patel said the land is too valuable for what’s been proposed.

“We need sustainable equitable growth in our area,” Patel said. “and a Costco is not going to do it.”

He came up with renderings for his own idea of what could go there including an amphitheater, shopping, condos, green space, and upscale restaurants.

“There are plenty of fast food places around here,” Patel said. “but we need sit-down dining restaurants.”

It’s unclear when a vote on the proposal would happen.
