Over 1,000 active cases of COVID-19 reported in Gwinnet County Schools

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County Schools is reporting over 1,000 active cases of COVID-19 among students and staff as of Thursday.

There are a total of 1,008 active cases within the district’s schools and the district office.

Mill Creek High School is reporting 40 active cases of the virus, South Gwinnett High School is reporting 34 active cases and Archer High School is reporting 28 cases. Several other schools are reporting case numbers in the double digits.

Gwinnett is Georgia’s largest school district. Officials release numbers of new cases daily.

Cobb County, which is the state’s second-largest district, releases new COVID-19 weekly on Fridays.

The 7-day-average for daily COVID-19 cases among Georgia children is 1,944. At least 1,188 of those cases were reported among children ages 10 - 17. Nearly 500 were reported in children ages 5 to 9.

The week of August 20, 7,726 new cases were reported statewide among children 17 and younger. New cases were up 59% from the previous week among children 5 - 17 years old and up 20% in children ages 0 - 4.
