NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene at the corner of Ivy Green and Evergreen Oak north of Dacula and saw the home destroyed.

Officials say firefighters responded to the home just before 11:15 a.m. and reported flames coming from the attic and quickly spreading to the second story.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, county fire officials said.

The homeowner said he left at 10 a.m. and returned home from running errands with his family to find firefighters trying to save his home.

Several of the family’s pets died in the fire.

After crews put the fire out, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources demolished what was left of the home because of structural concerns.

Investigators say the fire has been deemed an accident that started because of “discarded smoking materials.”
