Gwinnett police identify man charged in shooting at busy Target store Saturday afternoon

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Police said two people were involved in an argument that led to one person getting shot inside a Target store located in a busy Lawrenceville shopping plaza early Saturday afternoon.

Crime scene tape and several Gwinnett County police units closed off a large swath of the Lawrenceville Market plaza. Police say that a man was shot inside the store just before 1:30 p.m. The store is located at 875 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

Gwinnett County police arrested 30-year-old Elijah Mitchell of Lawrenceville shortly after the shooting. Mitchell was charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and third-degree cruelty to children.

The person who was shot is 27-year-old Orlanda Banks of Lawrenceville.

Police said they believe Mitchell and Banks knew each other and got into an argument at the store.

A Target spokesman released a statement Saturday afternoon that read:

Earlier today, a guest was shot during a domestic dispute inside our Lawrenceville store, and our team immediately contacted law enforcement and evacuated the building. We can confirm that all other guests and team members are safe, and our thoughts are with the victim and his family. The store will be closed for the remainder of the day as the Gwinnett County Police Department investigates. Target will provide law enforcement with any information needed for their investigation, and we’ll defer additional questions to them at this time.

Gwinnett County police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident or has some information to call them at 770-513-5300. Information can also be given to Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta. You can call them at 404-577-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers tipsters are eligible for a cash reward if they provide information leading to an arrest or indictment in this case.
