Group helps feed voters stuck in line at 50+ polling locations across metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — A group of people worked to feed voters who stood in long lines throughout the day.

The group of young people told Channel 2’s Audrey Washington that they saw the need and decided to step up.

The mission of the group was to protect, feed and keep voters in line at the polling place on Hank Aaron Drive in southwest Atlanta and others across the metro area.

“We have so much respect for people waiting in line. They shouldn’t have to wait in line,” said organizer Abbie Greene.

Greene is with a young millennial group based in Atlanta. She tweeted Washington Monday to let her know she had a plan for primary day.

“It shouldn’t take your whole day, but since people are out there doing this we want to help them,” Greene said.

The group crowdfunded resources to help hungry voters stuck in long polling place lines.

They gathered food and COVID-19 gear, like masks and gloves and brought them straight to the voters.

“Pizza, donuts, water, face masks… anything voters might need,” Greene said.

Greene said because her group helped so many voters on Tuesday, she will make sure to go even bigger, come November.

“Waiting eight plus hours to vote is a really terrible form of voter suppression,” Greene said. “It should be easy to vote and until that gets better, we’re going to keep doing this.”

In all, Greene said they delivered food to more than 50 polling sites.
