HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. — A longtime Georgia investigator who spent four decades in law enforcement is being remembered for his dedication to justice, his colleagues and his family.

Rick Poor, who served as Chief Investigator for the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, died Thursday, according to the District Attorney’s Office for Polk and Haralson counties.
Poor’s law enforcement career spanned 40 years. He began with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, where he served from 1983 to 1987.
He later continued his career with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation before joining the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
In 2020, Poor was named Investigator of the Year by the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, recognizing his professionalism, dedication and commitment to his work.

The district attorney’s office described Poor as not only an exceptional investigator, but also a loyal friend and a “genuinely kind and compassionate man.”
Poor was respected by colleagues and law enforcement partners throughout his career, the office said.
His commitment to his family was also a defining part of his life. Poor eventually retired from the district attorney’s office to care for his wife, Robin.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office also remembered Poor, saying his legacy of service continues through his daughter, Lt. J.P. Garmon, who serves with the agency and leads its School Resource Officer Unit.
“Beyond his distinguished career, Rick was a devoted family man who cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, and the simple moments spent with those he loved,” the sheriff’s office said.
The district attorney’s office extended its condolences to Robin, Jason, Jenn and the entire Poor family.
“His service, friendship, and memory will not be forgotten,” the office said.
