Georgia councilman pushes for saggy pants ordinance

LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. — One city councilman is asking everyone to pull up their pants or face possible punishment.

Valdosta City Councilman Eric Howard told the Valdosta Daily Times that wants to see the council pick up an ordinance against people with sagging pants below their waists.

“I’d like to see people pull their pants up and show respect for others,” he told the Times. “It doesn’t set a good example for our youth.”

There are several metro Atlanta cities that have passed similar “droopy drawers” policies in the past years, such as Forest Park, Hampton and Jonesboro.

Just last month, Howard and three other councilmembers voted to mandate masks in public amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Howard told the Valdosta Daily Times enforcement of the saggy pants ordinance would be similar to the mask mandate: You will receive a warning for the first offense and then a $50 citation after.

“If you’re going to show your butt in Valdosta, you’re going to have to pay,” he said.
