According to preliminary information from the GBI, a Laurens County Sheriff’s deputy approached 36-year-old Charles Daniel McMahan on Fire Tower Road around 2:09 p.m. to question him about an ongoing burglary investigation.

McMahan, who was riding a bicycle, ran away from the deputy, leading to a foot chase. During the pursuit, McMahan pointed an object at the officer, prompting the deputy to fire at him, the deputy said.

Following the pursuit, the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office arrested McMahan on charges unrelated to the shooting incident. Neither McMahan nor the deputy was injured during the encounter.
