GBI identifies suspect killed by troopers after crashing into patrol car

ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified a man at the center of a trooper-involved shooting in the Edgewood neighborhood in Atlanta.

The shooting happened Thursday.

The GBI said Andrew Smyrna, 32, of Ellenwood, died from gunshot wounds.

According to the GBI, a trooper found a stolen car in the 100 block of Leslie Street. When the trooper got out of his car to investigate, Smyrna tried to drive away. He drove in the direction of the trooper, hitting his patrol car.

That’s when the GBI says the trooper shot at Smyrna.

He sped away but later crashed near the intersection of Leslie Street SE and Wylie Street SE, the GBI said.

Smyrna was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he died.

The trooper was not hurt.
