The Chairman of the Fulton County Commission says it has to do with issues in the Tax Assessor’s office.
Loretta Green wasn’t aware of those issues when she opened her tax bill.
“I was shocked. I was ready to go pay it right then,” she told Channel 2’s Tom Jones.
Green says her bill said she only owed about $40. She’s accustomed to paying nearly $400. Green smiled and had one thought. “Somebody blessed me.”
Green didn’t know she and other Fulton County taxpayers are getting temporary bills, or what’s called a Temporary Collection Order, and the county had to go to court to get it approved.
The bills people are getting are based on 2025 evaluations of your property.
Chairman Robb Pitts says that’s because of issues in the Tax Assessor’s office.
“It should not have happened. I’m not happy about it. I’m going to say that,” he said.
Pitts says the board of assessors had not assessed an unprecedented number of properties, or land packages. And that delayed the Department of Revenue from certifying the 2026 tax digest. That must be done before taxes can be sent out.
Once that is done, property owners will get a new bill. “Taxpayers may get a refund or they may have to pay more depending on the final evaluations of the properties.”
Green says none of that is explained in her bill. “And a lot of seniors gonna think this is their bill and they’re gonna spend money for something else that they probably had reserved to pay the property tax.”
Pitts says the information is included in an insert with the bills and he said when property owners look up their bill online they will see an explanation there as well.
Pitts says the last time the county had to send out temporary bills was back around 2017.
The court order says the temporary collection order does not include the cities of Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell.
