UPDATE: Police identify 4-year-old accidentally shot, killed in parking lot, DeKalb police say

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A four-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself in a car in a parking lot Sunday night, DeKalb police said.

The victim was inside a car in the Publix parking lot on Panola Road with an infant and a 13-year-old relative around 5 p.m. His mother was inside the store when the child, identified as Miyell Hernandez, accidentally shot himself with a gun that was inside the car. The 13-year-old immediately ran inside the business for help. The child was taken to the hospital, where he died.

No one else was injured, and no one has been charged.

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the Hernandez family,” DeKalb Police Chief Mirtha Ramos said. “We’re imploring gun owners to always keep their guns safe and secure.”
