Suspect shot by DeKalb police during hostage situation dead, GBI says

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The man at the center of a hostage situation turned standoff on Saturday morning has died, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed to Channel 2 Action News.

DeKalb Police Chief Mirtha Ramos confirmed during a news conference on Channel 2 Action News at Noon that the suspect was shot and was in critical condition at the hospital. GBI officials identified him as 36-year-old Jeremy Haugabrook.

Ramos told said just after 3:30 a.m., a teenager who lived in a home on Cragstone Court off of Covington Highway called 911 and said someone in the house was being held against their will.

The teen also communicated with 911 via text and told dispatch he was locked inside his room, but could hear his mother’s boyfriend yelling at her and believed that the boyfriend, Haugabrook, was going to shoot his mother.

When officers arrived, they said they found Haugabrook holding a woman against her will inside the home.

SWAT officers responded to the scene at 5:30 a.m. after officers were not able to get Hauagbrook out of the home.

Channel 2′s Christian Jennings was on the scene during Channel 2 Action News Saturday AM where she saw a large police presence including several bomb squad trucks, K-9 units, and SWAT.

Eventually, the woman was able to leave the home of her own free will, but Hauagbrook remained barricaded inside.

At some point during an hours-long standoff, Hauagbrook fired shots inside the home, striking a pipe and causing a leak inside.

He then pointed a weapon at an officer. The officer then fired back, hitting Hauagbrook.

Police were unable to confirm the exact relationship between the two people in the home.

The officer is being placed on administrative leave as the GBI investigates.

This is the 44th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023.
