‘There was another way...’ Parents upset pepper-spray was used to break up DeKalb high school fight

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga — Parents are demanding answers after a school resource officer got involved in a fight at a DeKalb County high school.

Video obtained by Channel 2 Action News shows several students at the school throwing punch after punch until a school resource officer sprays what appears to be pepper spray in the hallway to break up the fight.

The identity of the officer has not been released.

Channel 2′s Larry Spruill talked to multiple students who said the fight started between a group of students in the front office area.

Spruill also talked to one parent, who said he was upset the officer resorted to pepper spray.

“They are innocent kids,” he said. “She’s a police officer. She was trained to handle this. She’s trained to deal with kids, not to hurt them.”

The school district and police are investigating the incident. Meanwhile, parents are demanding answers from the principal.

Parents said the school never notified them, “My mother called me and said your daughter just got sprayed with Mace.”

Authorities have not said how many kids were sprayed.

The school sent a statement reading:

“Several students were involved in a physical altercation that resulted in the use of OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray to regain control. EMS arrived and treated students on-site. No serious injuries were reported.”
