COUNTY-BY-COUNTY: Damage, road closures after storms in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — As strong line of storms has moved out of metro Atlanta, leaving widespread damage including trees down, power outages and flooding across north Georgia.

Severe flooding left entire roads washed out and communities stranded due to heavy rain. Trees fell on several buildings including an apartment complex and a church building and also on a work truck where a driver was trapped. He has since been rescued.

Storms moved out Friday afternoon.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said Saturday will be much colder with a chance for isolated showers.

ATLANTA

The intersection of Peachtree Battle Rd and Woodward Way was closed due to flooding Friday afternoon. Swiftwater crews responded to check a vehicle that nearly fully underwater. Fortunately, no one was inside.

A huge oak tree fell on a delivery truck on Blackland Road, trapping the driver. Fire crews were able to get the driver out.

Branches also fell on a fire truck, but firefighters were able to get out without injury.

COBB COUNTY

Columns Drive off of Johnson Ferry Road is completely flooded and shut down, according to Cobb police.

DEKALB COUNTY

Wires were also down at Hampton Hall Drive and Hallcrest Drive in Brookhaven and the road remained closed Friday afternoon.

Wawona Drive was also blocked due to a large sinkhole, according to police, but has since reopened. A tree was down on Windsor Parkway, which was closed between Le Conte Avenue and Saybrook Drive.

Multiple power poles were down on Brockett Road between Lawrenceville Highway and Lavista Road in Tucker. Several stoplights are also down along Lavista.

Trees and power lines were down on earlier Friday Woodrow Way near Inman Drive in Brookhaven, police said. The road has since reopened.

NewsChopper 2 flew over Medlock Park, where the baseball fields were still flooded Friday afternoon.

FORSYTH COUNTY

Four Forsyth County firefighters were injured Friday morning while responding to calls during severe storms, authorities told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

One firefighter was injured when a burning house collapsed on him, Forsyth County Fire Department Division Chief Jason Shivers said. Three others suffered minor injuries when their truck overturned on their way to the blaze.

GWINNETT COUNTY

There is a partial road collapse in a turn lane on Highway 124 at Henry Clower Boulevard in Snellville. Police say it is several feet deep and a sinkhole has developed.

A tree fell on an apartment complex at Concepts Drive at Peachtree Corners, Peachtree City. Luckily, everyone inside was able to get out safely.

NORTH FULTON COUNTY

Firefighters say they think lightning is to blame for a fire that gutted a home in Johns Creek. The fire broke out as the family inside sheltered in place during a tornado warning, officials said.

No one was hurt, but the home was destroyed.

A tree in Roswell and fell over several power lines on Magnolia St. between Coleman and Mimosa Blvd. The road was closed as crews work to remove the tree and fix power lines.

Viewers sent us video of heavy flooding in front of Alpharetta City Hall.

In Milton, weather conditions forced the city to cancel Saturday's Earth Day festivities at City Hall.

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY

The I-20 eastbound exit to Moreland Aveneue was blocked because of flooding Friday afternoon, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The exit has since been cleared.

BANKS COUNTY

Major flooding at Banks Crossed forced many restaurants and businesses to close Friday. Schools were also cancelled due to weather conditions.

At least ten people were trapped in their cars by rising flood waters and had to be rescued. Several people who were stranded had to be moved to a local recreation center.

Video shows two people fishing off their Jeep as the water rushed by.

The reservoir overflowed and spilled onto Chamber Road Thursday afternoon.

The Banks County Sheriff's Office said a portion of Peyton Road washed away in flood waters.

DAWSON COUNTY

Trees fell the area of Highway 136 at Grady's Place and Valley Road/ Vandiviere Road. Other roads across the county were closed due to ponding.

FAYETTE COUNTY

Peachtree City Police Department and Peachtree City Rescue said a sinkhole opened up on the southeast corner of the intersection of Highway 54 and 74.

HALL COUNTY

Dewberry Church at Clark's Bridge Road and Glade Road sustained damage. The church's steeple was blown and a tree crashed through the fellowship hall. 

HENRY COUNTY: 

All lanes of Georgia 20 northbound at Simpson Street were blocked due to flooding. They have since reopened.

JACKSON COUNTY: 

Viewers have sent Channel 2 Action News numerous photos and videos of severe flooding in Commerce.

Lavender Road and WH Hayes Road were both closed due to flooding, according to officials with Jackson County Emergency Management.

Roads also flooded in Jefferson.

MERIWETHER COUNTY

Georgia 18 at Overby Road and Walnut Creek was flooded and impassible Friday afternoon through evening.

ROCKDALE COUNTY

Viewers sent us video of a neighborhood that was heavily flooded in Conyers at Reavis Bluff Road.

A sinkhole opened up on Rowland Road near Rockdale High School. Officials said the road will be closed through the weekend between Pine Log Road and East View Road as flood waters recede and crews inspect the road.

SPALDING COUNTY

Flooding at a car dealership in Griffin left over a dozen vehicles underwater. Emergency officials said the flooding was the worst they'd seen in years.

TROUP COUNTY

Wright Road has washed out and is closed until further notice, according to the sheriff's office. Bill Taylor Rd. is also washed out due to flood waters.
