Police still searching for gunman who shot father outside Racetrac

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are still searching for the gunman who shot and killed a father as his 8-year-old daughter sat in the back seat of his car.

The incident happened on a busy Cobb County road around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, Brian Sclafford Clemons, 37, crashed near a Racetrac gas station. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. His daughter had minor injuries.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones was in Cobb County, where one business said a bullet went through a wall where they see patients. Luckily, the business was closed at the time.

People who work nearby said bullets were flying everywhere.

Sam Akinwumiju initially thought the holes in the Natural Health Center’s wall and ceiling where he works came from storm damage, until he found a bullet.

He was bothered because patients are seen right in the same room.

“You don’t want to come and try to do something for your health and now your safety is at risk,” Akinwumiju said.

Police said Clemons was shot in his car as he drove down Austell Road near Elmwood Drive.

The owner of G.M. Promotional Products gave Jones pictures of the scene after the car crashed.

Witnesses said that after Clemons was shot, one of the tenants at a business nearby took the 8-year-old girl inside and kept her there until police arrived. She is now back with her mother.

An officer was at the scene Monday looking through surveillance video that may have captured the shooting.

Meanwhile, Akinwumiju said the area is usually safe, but the deadly shooting is cause for concern.

“This definitely has our interest piqued in the safety of this neighborhood,” Akinwumiju said.
