Plan would use old hotels, tiny houses to boost affordable housing in Fulton County

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County residents may see new affordable housing popping up along an important corridor on Fulton Industrial Boulevard.

County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts wants to turn an old Red Roof Inn into transitional housing for vets and the working poor. The county recently bought the property, along with four other hotels or motels along the busy corridor, for $16 million as part of a revitalization plan in South Fulton.

“They were used for prostitution, drug abuse, any bad stuff that could be used were used in these properties, so we’re excited about the opportunity that we have,” Pitts told Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Sophia Choi.

The hotel-to-housing project is just part of a larger affordable housing plan the county is considering. Pitts would also like to spend a $1 million on a pilot project involving what he calls “tiny homes.”

“If you’re really serious about affordable housing, this has to be an option to be pursued,” Pitts said.

He plans to build eight homes on an acre of county-owned land yet to be identified and partner with local churches to build more micro communities.

“Building tiny homes on their church owned property, for their seniors in particular. This is all the space that most people need, and it would be walking distance to services,” Pitts said.
