2 workers have moderate to severe burns following explosion flash at Cobb County hotel

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Two people are injured after an explosion flash happened inside a hotel that is under construction.

The incident happened at the future Candlewood Suites in Smyrna off Interstate 75 and Windy Hill Road.

The workers are in the hospital with moderate to severe burns. They were on the fifth floor of the hotel in a utility room when that explosion flash happened.

People who work in the area told Channel 2′s Michele Newell they heard a loud boom and rushed outside to see what was going on.

It was just before 1 p.m. when emergency crews rushed to the hotel after they received calls about a possible explosion.

“Two male patients were transported to nearby hospitals with moderate to severe burns,” said Ramses Rivas, public information officer for Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services. “They we’re purging the gas system to light the pilot in the hotel.”

“It quickly flashed. There was no extension, meaning there was not fire. Once they got on scene there was no fire visible or present,” Rivas said.

The gas company arrived quickly. Crews checked the gas levels and determined it was safe.

They opened windows and used fans to ventilate the area. Emergency crews said they are just glad it wasn’t worse.

“Extremely thankful. Thanks to the quick response of our units, the gas company. Everything went smoothly,” Rivas said.
