MARIETTA, Ga. — A metro Atlanta deputy suffered significant injuries after being attacked by a detainee at the jail.

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office said the attack occurred at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
The detainee is a murder suspect who is awaiting extradition to Tennessee, according to the sheriff’s office.
The deputy was taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for a broken jaw and a concussion.
“Today’s incident serves as a stark reminder that despite our best efforts, detention center operations can be extremely dangerous,” Sheriff Craig Owens said.

Owens said the deputy remains in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
He also praised jail staff and leadership for their response to the attack.
“I commend our jail staff and leadership for their swift actions to care for their coworker, protect other detainees, and maintain order,” Owens said.
The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
