COBB COUNTY/FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation wants drivers to be aware that a major metro Atlanta connection will be closed Tuesday through Thursday.
Drivers should know that the Powers Ferry Road bridge over the Chattahoochee River will be shut down for most of the week.
Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach was on the Fulton County side of the bridge, where it’s not the first time the bridge has closed.
At the end of July, GDOT closed the Powers Ferry Road bridge for maintenance, then it was over the weekend.

But now, the closure will be in the middle of the work week.
“Oh yeah, it’s going to be a madhouse,” one driver said.
Drivers and others living along Powers Ferry Road told Channel 2 Action News they were bracing for another closure.

Alex Apolaya, who walks his dog nearby, hopes everyone will see the warning signs and heed them starting Tuesday.
“This whole entire section right here became a line that eventually ended up turning, people making a U-turn,” Apolaya said. “Hopefully this time. Second time around people will already be aware of it.”
Some living nearby are worried the closure will push a lot more traffic onto Interstate 285 and the detour on North Interstate Parkway.
Both already back up during rush hour.
“If you’re commuting it’s going to be bad because people will go on here instead of on 285,” Ryan Barrett said. As for work on Tuesday through Thursday, Barrett said “I work from home, I’m going to stay home, I’m not leaving, tell you that much.”
The closure is supposed to last Sept. 1 to Sept. 3, but Gehlbach heard from GDOT that it won’t close until after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
GDOT said it hopes to have the bridge reopen by late afternoon on Thursday.
