Family identifies pregnant mother, 8-year-old boy killed in crash

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Family members have set up a GoFundMe account to help the only survivor of a crash that took the lives of a pregnant mother and her child in Clayton County.

Lashad Lewis was driving with his family, fiancée Brandy Gilkey, her son Christian McDonald and their dog Goliath, when they were hit head-on by an impaired driver.

The accident happened on Highway 138 near Jonesboro Road on July 25.  Police said an impaired driver who sped away from police crashed into the family’s SUV. The driver, identified as Michael Jerome Morris, died at the scene.

Gilkey and her unborn child and her son Christian were taken to the hospital, where they both died from their injuries. The dog was also killed.

Lewis was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Family members said Christian loved math, bubbles, race cars, cartoons and playing games.

“Brandy was a kind, loving, caring person and an amazing teacher who loved her students,” Gilkey’s future sister-in-law wrote on GoFundMe. “She was a firm believer of Christ and worked very hard. Christian was only 8 years old. He was the smartest kid I’ve ever known.”
