WOODSTOCK, Ga. — Ansley Park mobile home park opened decades ago on Dupree Road and 681 Stonebridge Parkway in Cherokee County.
Thursday night, the Woodstock Planning Commission voted to recommend the annexation and rezoning of the 31-acre property.
The owner has retired and wants to sell the land to a developer who plans to build 220 single-family homes.
“We are in the middle of an affordability crisis, a housing crisis, and an employment crisis,” neighbor Axel Vera said to Channel 2’s Tom Regan.
Vera knows family and friends who live in the mobile home park and will struggle to find affordable rent in the area.
“People have decades living here. It’s not just a monetary cost; it’s an emotional cost that a lot of these people will have to struggle through,” Vera said.
Abel Mejia, who has lived in Ansley Park for a dozen years, says he’s not sure where he going to go if the mobile home park closes.
“We can’t afford to live anywhere else around here because the rent is so high. There are kids here. There are 70-80 children who go to school. We have to relocate schools, people have to leave their careers and move somewhere else,” said Mejia.
The owner has offered tenants who own a trailer a $10,000 reimbursement to move them.
Mejia said the cost is “unsustainable” when it comes to moving the trailers.
“It will cost around 25 grand just to move one of the mobile homes,” said Mejia.
A final vote on the rezoning request will take place at the Woodstock City Council meeting on Aug. 24.
The developer sent this statement to Channel 2 Action News:
“David Weekley Homes is a prospective purchaser of the property and plans to develop a community of new single-family homes on the property to meet the housing needs of local residents.
Redevelopment of the property remains contingent upon City approval, and last night’s hearing is one step in the City’s public review process.
The current property owner has publicly stated that relocation assistance would be made available to eligible tenants if the plan is approved.
We appreciate the consideration being given and will continue to respect the process, as the City seeks to balance responsible growth and private property rights."
