Car flies over guardrail during deadly street racing crash near Helen

UNION COUNTY, Ga. — One driver is dead, another injured, and a third is under arrest. Investigators suspect it all started with street racing.

The Georgia State Patrol says a trooper patrolling the Blood Mountain/Richard Russell Scenic Bypass area tried to pull over two cars speeding in Union County on Saturday. Both drivers took off.

A Dodge Challenger went South and a Mitsubishi Lancer went North. The Trooper wend after the Mitsubishi.

The driver lost control in a curve on SR 17. Investigators say the Mitsubishi slammed head on into a Nissan Murano.

The Mitsubishi went over the guardrail and down an embankment. The driver of the Mitsubishi died. The State Patrol identified him as Rhyan Coley Davis, 37, of Gainesville.

The 65-year-old driver of the Nissan was taken to the hospital.

As troopers investigated the crash they learned a Challenger crashed in Helen. The driver was identified as Qayyim Yah Yah Ali, 23, of Philadelphia, PA.

Ali was arrested and taken to the Union County Jail.

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting in the investigation.
