Watermain break to tie up midtown traffic through early week

ATLANTA — If you need to travel through the north part of midtown Atlanta the next few days, you might want to find another route.

A Saturday morning water main break at the intersection of Peachtree St. and 17th St. led to extensive street damage and according to the City of Atlanta, will keep the intersection closed until at least Tuesday.

Atlanta Watershed said the 10-inch pipe broke sometime early Saturday morning and at one point interrupted service to nearly 200 homes, four condos and handful of hydrants.

Crews were able to restore service to the area late Saturday night.

The city says work will continue 24-hours a day until the job is complete. Until then, residents will still be allowed to their homes and other vital services will continue. People who normally park in the area will need to find other options.

Traffic will be impacted through the whole process. People traveling through the area on Sunday will need to work around the closure. Monday morning commuters will need to find other ways to get to work.

There are couple of ways to bypass the work if you need to get through the area:

  • Traveling northbound on Peachtree St. NE: Turn left onto 16th St. NE towards Arts Center Way NE. Turn right onto Arts Center Way NE towards West Peachtree St. NW. Turn right onto West Peachtree St. towards 17th St. NW. Turn left onto 17th St. NW.
  • Traveling eastbound on 17th St. NE: Turn right onto Peachtree Circle NE towards 16th St. Turn right onto 16th St. towards Arts Center Way NE. Turn onto Arts Center Way NE towards West Peachtree St. NW. Turn right onto West Peachtree St. towards 17th St. NW. Turn left onto 17th St. NW.
